Axé Capoeira International came to us with a challenge that was equal parts technical and cultural. As a global martial arts organization with deep Afro-Brazilian roots, their energy was electric—but their digital presence was static, fragmented, and unable to scale. The existing website failed to capture the movement, music, and raw spirit of Capoeira, while behind the scenes, critical operations like event registrations, membership management, and chapter communication relied on manual processes that consumed time and invited error. Our mandate was to transform a cherished legacy into a modern digital ecosystem that could serve a worldwide community without losing the soul of the art form. The result is a visually dynamic, performance-driven platform built on Webflow, where intelligent automation meets cultural reverence, and where the roda's rhythm finally finds its digital equal.

For more than four decades, Grupo Axé Capoeira has been one of the most influential organizations dedicated to preserving and teaching the Afro-Brazilian art of capoeira. Founded in Recife, Brazil, in 1982, the organization has grown into an international community with thousands of students, instructors, and schools operating across multiple continents. Beyond martial arts, Axé represents music, history, education, and cultural exchange, making the brand far more complex than a traditional fitness or sports organization.
When the project began, the organization's digital presence no longer reflected its global reputation. Although the website contained valuable information, it had gradually become difficult to navigate, visually inconsistent, and increasingly challenging to maintain. New visitors struggled to understand the scale of the organization, while existing members lacked a central place to access events, schools, instructors, and educational resources.
The challenge extended well beyond designing a modern interface. The website needed to communicate over forty years of history without feeling outdated. It needed to introduce newcomers to capoeira while simultaneously serving experienced practitioners from around the world. Most importantly, it needed to capture the energy of an art form built on rhythm, movement, and human connection—qualities that are difficult to translate into a static digital experience.
Before any design work began, we spent time understanding how different audiences interacted with the organization. Someone discovering capoeira for the first time has very different expectations than a student searching for the nearest academy or an instructor looking for upcoming international events. The website needed to accommodate these journeys without becoming overwhelming.
One of the first observations was that the previous site presented information almost chronologically rather than strategically. Visitors had to search for essential content instead of naturally discovering it. Our objective became creating a clearer information architecture that guides users through the organization while encouraging exploration instead of forcing it.
Rather than approaching the project as a traditional redesign, we viewed it as the creation of a digital headquarters for a global community.
From a visual perspective, the design had to balance two seemingly opposite characteristics. Capoeira is expressive, energetic, and constantly moving, yet Grupo Axé Capoeira is also an established institution with decades of heritage and international recognition. Leaning too heavily toward energetic visuals risked making the organization appear less professional, while an overly corporate aesthetic would remove much of the culture that defines it.
The solution was built around clean layouts supported by immersive imagery, carefully paced motion, and generous use of white space. Instead of filling every screen with visual elements, we allowed photography and video to communicate the atmosphere of capoeira naturally. Large imagery introduces visitors to the movement, discipline, and community without requiring lengthy explanations.
Typography also became an important storytelling tool. Clear hierarchy improves readability while allowing historical content, educational information, and event announcements to coexist within the same visual system. Every page was designed to feel consistent regardless of the type of content being presented.
Color played a supporting rather than dominant role. Instead of overwhelming the interface with bright graphics, the palette complements the photography and reinforces the identity already associated with Grupo Axé Capoeira. This restrained approach ensures that the people, movement, and culture remain the focus throughout the experience.
Webflow was selected because it provided the flexibility required to develop a fully custom website without sacrificing performance or long-term maintainability. Rather than adapting the organization to the limitations of a template, every component was designed specifically for the project's requirements.
A modular content system became one of the most important aspects of development. The organization regularly publishes information about schools, instructors, workshops, international events, music, educational resources, and community initiatives. Building everything as reusable CMS components allows the internal team to update content independently while maintaining visual consistency across the site.
Performance was another major consideration. Visitors access the website from countries around the world using a wide range of devices and internet connections. Every animation, image, and interaction was optimized to create a smooth experience without compromising loading speed or accessibility.
Navigation received particular attention throughout the project. The breadth of content presented a significant UX challenge, requiring a structure that remained intuitive despite serving multiple audiences. Instead of organizing information solely by department or chronology, the site guides visitors according to their goals—whether they are looking for classes, exploring the history of the organization, finding an instructor, or learning about international events.
Scalability influenced nearly every technical decision. Grupo Axé Capoeira continues to grow, adding new schools, instructors, and events every year. The website therefore needed to function not simply as today's marketing platform but as an evolving digital ecosystem capable of supporting future expansion without requiring frequent redevelopment.
Accessibility and responsiveness were equally important. Because the audience spans different generations and countries, every page was designed to function consistently across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices while maintaining readability and usability regardless of screen size.
Perhaps the greatest challenge throughout the project was not technical but emotional. Capoeira is an experience built around movement, music, and human interaction. A website cannot recreate that experience directly, but it can create anticipation. Every design decision was intended to encourage visitors to take the next step—join a local academy, attend an event, explore the organization's history, or simply spend more time learning about a tradition that has connected communities around the world for generations.
The completed website provides Grupo Axé Capoeira with a digital platform that reflects the scale and professionalism of the organization while preserving the cultural identity that makes it unique. Information is easier to discover, content is significantly easier to manage, and the design provides a stronger first impression for prospective students, instructors, partners, and event organizers alike.
Rather than simply replacing an outdated website, the project established a scalable digital foundation capable of supporting Grupo Axé Capoeira's continued international growth. The result is a platform that respects more than forty years of cultural heritage while providing the flexibility, performance, and usability expected from a modern digital experience.
This project reflects our approach at VanDesign: combining strategy, design, and development into a single process that creates websites designed not only to look exceptional on launch day, but to remain effective as organizations evolve.
