Why Generic Local SEO Advice Doesn't Work

Most Vancouver businesses know they need 'better local SEO.' What they don't know is which specific factors are holding them back versus their exact competitors.

Generic advice says: 'Get more reviews, update your profile, optimize your Google Business Profile.' That's vague. It doesn't tell you whether you're losing to competitors on reviews, consistency, or authority.

Competitive local SEO is specific. You audit exactly what your top 3 competitors are doing, identify the 2-3 factors where they're beating you, and implement those specific factors.

The Four-Factor Local SEO Audit Framework

Factor 1: NAP Consistency — Name, Address, Phone consistency across Google Business Profile, website, local directories (Yelp, Yellow Pages, industry-specific directories). Inconsistencies signal weak local authority. Your competitors likely have perfect NAP consistency across 15+ sources. You probably have inconsistencies across 3-4.

Factor 2: Review Velocity and Recency — Not just total review count, but how many reviews per month and how recent the newest reviews are. A competitor with 100 reviews all from 2023 is less visible than one with 50 reviews from the last 90 days. Google prioritizes fresh reviews.

Factor 3: Citation Authority — Are you listed in industry-specific directories (for dentists: Zocdoc, Healthgrades, etc.)? Your competitors are. Those citations signal authority in specific verticals.

Factor 4: Content Localization — Does your website content mention specific Vancouver neighborhoods? Your competitors' blogs probably mention Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Strathcona, Yaletown by name, linking those neighborhoods to specific services. You're probably using generic 'Vancouver' language.

How to Run the Audit

Identify your top 3 local competitors in Google search results for your core keywords. For each competitor, score them 1-10 on: NAP consistency, review count, review recency, citation count, content localization.

You'll quickly see which factor is costing you visibility. If competitors have 3x your review count, that's your gap. If competitors mention specific neighborhoods 30 times in their blog and you mention them 0 times, that's your gap.

Fix the biggest gap first. That's your fastest path to outranking them.

The 30-Day Local SEO Turnaround

Week 1-2: Fix NAP consistency across all directories. Week 2-3: Launch review generation campaign targeting 8-12 new reviews per month. Week 3-4: Audit your website content and add hyperlocal references to 10 key pages (mentioning specific neighborhoods, local landmarks, neighborhood-specific problems your service solves).

By week 4, you'll be beating your competitors on at least one factor. Compound that advantage over 3 months and you'll outrank them on local search.
